How to Fix Sunroof Leaks

Cleaning sunroof drain tubes

A leaking sunroof is not only annoying – it can damage your headliner, upholstery, and even electronics. Fortunately, many leaks can be fixed with simple DIY steps. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of diagnosing and repairing the most common causes of sunroof leaks.

1. Identify the Source of the Leak

Before you start, try to determine where the water is entering. Common signs:

  • Wet headliner around the sunroof opening – usually a blocked drain or bad seal.
  • Water dripping from the roof console or map lights – drain tubes disconnected or cracked.
  • Pooling water in the footwells – drains clogged, water overflowing into the cabin.

2. Clean the Drain Tubes

The most common cause of leaks is clogged drain tubes. They are located at each corner of the sunroof opening. Use a soft brush or compressed air to gently clear debris. You can also pour a small amount of water into the drain channel to verify flow – it should exit under the car near the wheels.

Tip: Never use wire or sharp objects, as you may puncture the tube.

3. Inspect and Replace Seals

If drains are clear but water still enters, the rubber seal around the glass may be damaged or hardened. Clean it with mild soap and apply a rubber conditioner. If cracked or flattened, the seal needs replacement. Seals are usually available from dealers or online – ensure you get the correct part for your vehicle.

4. Check Drain Tube Connections

In some cars, the drain tubes can become disconnected from the sunroof frame or the exit points. You may need to lower the headliner slightly to access them. Reconnect any loose tubes and secure with zip ties if necessary.

5. Test After Repair

After cleaning or replacing parts, pour water over the sunroof (a hose works) and check for any leaks. Also inspect the headliner from inside. If the leak persists, the problem might be internal – a cracked drain pan or broken drainage channel. In such cases, professional help is recommended.
