BMW X5 Sunroof Stuck on One Side
The BMW X5 (especially E70, F15, and G05 models) features a large panoramic sunroof. It’s not uncommon for one side to lag behind or get completely stuck. Here’s what you need to know.
Why Does It Happen?
- Broken plastic guides – The sunroof cassette has plastic parts that wear out.
- Dry or jammed tracks – Lack of lubrication causes uneven movement.
- Motor coupling issues – The motor drives both sides via cables; one cable may slip.
Step 1: Try a Reset
With the ignition on, try pressing and holding the close button for 30 seconds. Sometimes the system recalibrates and fixes minor misalignments.
Step 2: Manual Close
Locate the manual hex tool behind the overhead console. Turn it gently to close the sunroof evenly. If one side won’t move, do not force it – you may break the mechanism.
Step 3: Inspect the Tracks
Open the sunroof as far as possible and clean the rails. Use a silicone spray lubricant. Check for broken pieces of plastic – if you find any, the guides are likely damaged.
When Professional Repair Is Needed
Replacing the guides or cables often requires removing the headliner and the entire sunroof cassette. This is a labour‑intensive job. Our team at Carnec Sunroofs has extensive experience with BMW X5 models and can perform this repair efficiently.
“BMW X5 sunroof issues are common but repairable. We can often fix them without replacing the entire cassette.”
