How to Close Sunroof Manually Without Switch

Using hex key to manually close sunroof

Your sunroof’s electric motor has failed, the switch is broken, or the battery is dead – but rain is coming. Don’t panic. Most sunroofs have a manual override. Here’s how to use it.

1. Find the Manual Tool

Look in your vehicle’s toolkit (often in the boot) for a hex key or Allen wrench. Some cars have a special crank stored near the sunroof motor. If you can’t find it, a standard Allen key of the correct size may work.

2. Locate the Override Socket

Inside the car, near the sunroof switch or behind the overhead console, there’s usually a small plastic cover. Pry it open gently – underneath you’ll see a hexagonal socket.

3. Insert and Turn

Insert the tool and turn it. Clockwise usually closes the sunroof, counter‑clockwise opens it. Turn slowly and evenly. If you meet resistance, stop – you may need to check for obstructions.

4. If There’s No Visible Socket

In some cars, the manual override is on the sunroof motor itself, which may be behind the headliner. You might need to remove the interior light assembly to access it. Consult your owner’s manual for the exact location.

5. After Closing

Once closed, you can leave it until you can have the electrical issue repaired. Avoid forcing it further than the closed position to prevent damage.
