Signs Your Sunroof Motor is Damaged

Sunroof motor and gears

The sunroof motor is the heart of your electric sunroof. When it starts to fail, it gives clear warning signs. Recognising them early can save you from a completely stuck sunroof and a more expensive repair.

1. Unusual Noises

Grinding, clicking, or whining sounds when operating the sunroof often indicate worn gears or a motor struggling. This could be due to lack of lubrication, debris, or internal motor damage.

2. Slow or Erratic Movement

If the sunroof moves slower than usual, jerks, or stops mid‑way, the motor may be losing power. Don’t force it – you could strip gears.

3. Intermittent Operation

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. This could be a failing motor, a loose connection, or a failing switch. Intermittent issues often precede complete failure.

4. No Movement at All (but you hear a click)

If you hear a click when pressing the switch but nothing moves, the motor is trying but can’t overcome resistance – possibly a jammed mechanism. If you hear nothing, the motor may be electrically dead.

5. Burning Smell

A burning odour when using the sunroof suggests the motor is overheating due to excessive friction or an electrical short. Stop using it immediately.

What to Do

First, check the fuse. If it’s fine, try lubricating the tracks – reduced friction might help the motor. If the symptoms persist, the motor likely needs replacement. At Carnec Sunroofs, we can supply and install a new motor, often with same‑day service.

“Ignoring a struggling motor usually leads to a full mechanism replacement. Early intervention is key.”
